To what extent can AI become a partner in vocal improvisation? How real is the relationship?
Led by VoiceLab studio, the project ran from July to December 2024, and included workshop and research sessions, work-in-progress shows, concerts and online meetings with experts.
It involved extensive laboratory work, preparing a group of singers to compose immersive experiences in real time - choral singing and algorithm together. The research used sound wave therapy and polyvagal theory as tools for broadening the perception of the vocal performer. The aim was to build a sensitive body, allowing the singers to go beyond their usual patterns, thanks to a learned trust in the physical potential of sound and the unlimited possibilities of the imagination.
The project resulted in an album, 'interface //' which is freely available to listen to online.
'Contact Space // Interface' was co-organised by Upstream Foundation and the Grotowski Institute, with funding from NextGenerationEU.
